About Jessica

Jessica: student, daughter, friend, home cook, colitis patient
I started Creativity and Care to share my personal experiences of living with colitis. I was diagnosed with colitis in early 2006. Since then, I have struggled with this disease every day and  watched my family and friends struggle to help me. However, I realize that having IBD isn't the end of the world and choose to live my life with creativity and care.

This blog shares experiences and recipes. I am not a medical professional. Everything I post here is based on personal experience and advice from my medical and naturopathic doctors. If you have colitis, please remember that you and I are different people and to take my posts with a grain of salt.

My current treatment plan includes prescription drugs and naturopathic remedies. I have chosen not to post this treatment plan out of respect for my gastroenterologist and my naturopath. From time to time, I will post information and reviews of naturopathic remedies that I use. Please, if you have colitis, talk to a medical professional before altering your treatment plan.

I also follow a gluten-free, dairy-free diet but do not adhere to this 100% since I am not Celiac or lactose-intolerant. I also avoid garlic and onions as much as possible. However, this is especially challenging when dining out or using prepared ingredients because these two ingredients are very flavorful. Look out for recipes that can be adapted for different food allergies!

I don't claim to be a foodie but I love cooking and eating. Before I started my gluten-free, dairy-free diet, I was lured away to France for a year just for the bread and cheese! Usually I cook small meals at home for one or two. My "restricted" diet hasn't stopped me from dining out either. I've found some great places in Toronto that are sensitive to my needs. Check back regularly for reviews!

I choose not to let my colitis define me- so that makes me...

A 20-something, Chinese-Canadian, bookworm, blackberry-addict, Vancouver transplant, Canucks fan, TTC rider, Salon.com reader, kareoke lover, Master's student researching environmental education... who just happens to have colitis.
